Dear friends,

We here at P&C would like to usher in the bright and hopeful new year by… skipping January altogether! (hmm, now how did that happen? oh well) On this epic first day of February we kick off 2012 with a brand new guest post by a esteemed colleague, sister in law, lover of boots and capes, self-proclaimed color specialist, dirty martini expert, Art Director and designer extraordinaire, expert flower arranger, lover of all things 'ghosty', friend of witches and vampires, lover of animals, mother to Biggie, wife of Lil' Bruder, all-around fantastical free spirit who may sometimes be spotted with a feather or two in her hair, I give you my dear sisterbear, Madame Sugahblade Steffi (aka: Mrs. Z, Steppers, Steph, Pipka, Babe).

This lovely lady has been a long-time supporter of P&C and prides herself on being the first commenter whenever possible. Most bloggers will tell you that this is quite an honor. I am very happy to report that
she's recently started blogging herself and her daily musings on life, love and the pursuit of happiness can be found at the lovely Life Of Steph. I asked this talented lady if she might be interested in putting together a guest post for all the kids out there who had no music to listen to for the entire month of January. She obliged with a most pleasant musical tapestry woven with some fine pearls of rhythm, melody and at least one man singing Be My Baby in a very high pitched voice that I have come to deem my favorite song on this playlist. So without further ado, I bring you Guest Popcast #578.

………………..AND NOW A MESSAGE FROM GUEST POPCASTER, MADAME SUGAHBLADE.……………….

Hey babes! Today’s P&C is being transmitted from the Z hive by yours truly Sugahblade and DJ Mike Butts (aka Biggie). We hope you dig the tunes that we’ve carefully selected for you.

Join us on an musical journey that starts out mellow with a haunting cover of Be My Baby by DM Stith and then builds to a power anthem by the flaming head of fire Florence + The Machine. Also be on the look out for the melodic duo Lucius straight out of Brooklyn (thank you Mr. Lovie for turning me onto them). Also check out this video by Keren Ann she rocks it. Lastly, if you haven’t been digging on them already be sure to check out First Aid Kit you won’t be sorry. These two Swedish sisters will knock you off your block with their harmony and sweet lyrics.

So sit back and relax … ahh … erase the gray of your cubicle and replace it with the golden beaches of Mexico and pour yourself a virtual Piña colada.

(Also: This set treats the following: frozen airplane windows, screaming hungry cats, broken hearts, dry patches on your face and chipped red nail polish.)

Do you need a safe place to go? I'm not talking about a chalet in the Alps or a fort made of couch cushions, nice as both of those sound. I mean a haven free from all the garish red-and-greenery, irritating carols, forced cheer, stress, obligations, crazy extended family members, and empty promises of peace and joy that are ever present 'round this time of year. Of course, there are a few nice things that come with the holidays — the general abundance of sweet treats is a definite plus, and I do enjoy exchanging prezzies with Dr. Marnie — but the rest of it? No thanks. If only there were some sort of magic wand that could make it all go away. (Hitachi? You guys are pretty good at making magic wands. Maybe your engineers could get to work on a prototype?) But for now, let this popcast be your magic wand.

Dear friends,

After a decent hiatus during which I participated in the 50th annual Siberian Pop Music Summit in Vladivostok, I return with a satchel full of tunes that will encourage a generous amount of modern dancing. While discussing the topic with my fellow Popologists, it was concluded that disco beats and lush electronic orchestrations are becoming increasingly popular tools in the fight against depression, diabetes and arthritis. Studies show that the more modern dancing you can participate in, preferably in your living room whilst wearing a pair of fuzzy socks, the happier you will be. Which is why CEO's version of Ave Maria has been included on this week's playlist. I encourage you to find your own modern dancing voice through repeated arm thrusts, dramatic falls on the floor, pirouettes, pliés and jazz hands. I look forward to hearing from those of you who heed my advice. Now I must go and practice my french mime 'hands-on-the-glass-wall' technique. I bid you adieu.

PS: And don't forget -

If ever you should look in the mirror and wonder who it is that you are, and wonder what it is that you came for, well, I know the answer. You're beautiful. You came from heaven. You came down to this place. To fill out the dark corners with your everlasting light. And that's why I love you. We love you.

Thanksgiving is here! Of course, it's a time of quiet reflection and humble gratitude. Let's take a couple seconds to think about the good things in our lives.

Are you done? Because now it's time to push your stomach to the limit. It's time to stuff your face with all manner of casseroles and sauces and bird carcasses until you are immobile and ill. You may then ask yourself why you didn't stop after your third helping of Aunt Pearl's ambrosia. You will promise never to eat so much again. Then you will start thinking about portion control and dusting off the bike you have stored in the garage and even maybe trying that vegan restaurant you've been scoffing at. But you will forget all that ten minutes later when dessert is served, because there is no way your lizard brain can turn down a good pie.

 Ladies  & Gentlemen,
I am so happy to present a long-awaited guest popcast from a long-time P&C supporter, guest singer for The Falsies at the legendary House of Flowers, part-time 80s Historian, full-time lover of fine wines, actual big brother to Dr. Marnie, life-long partner of Madame Sugahblade and co-guardian of Sir Biggie…. I bring you the beloved Lil' Bruder, little brother to music loving popsters all over the world.

Hip Biscuits For the Short Crowd: A musical journey in two parts.

The other day, I was feeling so famboobled after a long day at work that when I got home I went straight to my stack of feel good biscuits and started throwing them on the platter. One after another they lit up this glow worm and I got to thinking, why haven't I made a tape for all of the cool youngsters I know? So I did it. It took a lot of rewinding and making notes to remake the list ala digital, but here it is: Hip Biscuits For the Short Crowd. Or Hot Biscuits For the Bustlin' Youngster In a Mixed Up Tape. Either way, life has a way of speeding the heck up and we need to slow it down sometimes, any which way we can! So take off your socks, light up a candle or twelve, find a buddy or your favorite critter and see where this takes ya. Like my buddies the Space Monkeys say: "Don't be afraid of the dark, and keep your dreams close to your heart. Cuz I've been around and seen people drown in the depths of success."

Welp, here's to that ethereal life preserver.

Big love,
Lil' Bruder

How are you all are recovering from what I'm sure was another wild Halloween? If you're anything like Dr. Marnie and myself, you had fun but are a little worse for the wear. Your legs are probably sore from running from the police and you're a bit scratched up from hiding in your neighbor's rose bushes. (Hopefully you didn't have to spend all night there like we did!) And then, the next day being just another ol' Tuesday, you had to get right back in the swing of things without coming up for air. Today, dear reader, I give you permission to relax. Go ahead, leave work early. Take a bubble bath. Have a glass of wine. Have another glass of wine. Watch some schlocky TV. Have a cocktail. And unwind with this mellow little popcast. You deserve it.

Dr. Marnie here!

Once upon a time in a magical land of college radio, I went by the moniker Miss Marnie Hotpants and Pop! & Circumstance was not the name of a music blog, but rather an actual weekly radio show. Its been many years since I revisited the underground lair known as KDVS, 90.3fm but I got an unexpected invitation to guest dj on Michael Leahy's (of Cool as Folk fame) show, One on One. His co-host Maggie Cat was out for the night and I had the pleasure of co-piloting the show for the evening. You can catch the archived show here!

popcast 570

This week's popcast prefers a dark, moist environment. Spores are scattered across a tangle of moss, and if the conditions are just so, the tiniest formation begins to appear after five to seven days. In another three, the popcast will have reached maturity if it has not been consumed by foraging deer in the interim. Laypersons can easily identify this popcast by its unique sound, as well as by checking the gills; if they are attached to the stem and are chartreuse in color, you are looking at Popcast #570. Consumption of this popcast by humans is generally considered safe, but be advised that 0.04% of the population will experience severe liver damage due to a rare gene mutation.

I totally nicked this photo from www.bighappyfunhouse.com cuz its pure genius. As is the website it came from.

Hello fellow popsters, Dr. Marnie here. While my colleague and fellow musicologist Ms. G. Zee Esq. takes the week off to forage in the far cosmic reaches of the rock'n'rollosphere for next week's treasures, I hereby bring this week's highly nutritious offerings. I think you'll find this particular mixture to not only promote hair growth and skin rejuvination, but with such lyrics as "…you said you'd give me the right advice..", "tell me, when is this whole world gonna treat me kind?" and "Her mind's made up she don't wanna go steady, she's only 17 so she's prolly not ready…", you just might find solace in the fact that rockstars are singing the same song you are (albeit, with much better vocals and a groovier beat.) Enjoy!

Dear listeners, friends and fellow pop purists:

No doubt about it, we are living in difficult times. Unemployment is high, morale is low and savings accounts even lower. Everyday it seems another trusted social and economic pillar crumbles right in front of our eyes. Its in times like these that we need music more than ever.  We must find refuge in rock, salvation in soul, peace in pop and even normalcy in new wave. And its clear that P&C is just the multinational conglomerate to do it. We here at P&C laboratories can hardly contain our excitement. We start a new month, and a new season with exciting news: the merger of two of musical broadcasting's greatest enterprises, P&C and E&L. Which at first glance might spell PCEL but I'd like to think it spells SUCCESS. This merger has been in the works for some time, with high-level negotiations going on daily in our Zurich mountaintop office. After much consideration and examination,  I wholeheartedly welcome the newest addition to P&C, Miss Gina Zee Esq. Her pop credentials are of the highest quality and her rock and roll expertise spans great musical expanses ranging from The Velvet Underground to Wesley Willis. I have nothing but great things to say about the honorable Miss. Zee and I think you all will find her musical tastes to be a fresh and welcome addition to the P&C pop canon.

AND NOW A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW P&C CO-CONTRIBUTOR Ms. G. Zee, Esq.

Since the dawn of the new millennium, Pop and Circumstance has been one of the leading enterprises in the dissemination of good tunes and good times to an audience of renowned celebrities, average Joes, and everyone in between. A dynamic and leading force in the industry, P&C always strives to create an experience for the listener that is at once invigorating, educational, and therapeutic. In an effort to continue ensuring that today's pop consumer has access to top-tier audio artifacts, P&C Global Conglomerates has acquired boutique music scavenging outfit Electricity and Lust Industries. E&L is a visionary corporation that has shared P&C's goal of bringing all things good-sounding to the ears of people the world over since E&L founder G. Zee and P&C CEO Dr. M. Hotpants collaborated during their days at broadcasting giant KDVS and nights in Suite 213 at the legendary House of Flowers.

As E&L's founder, it is my pleasure to bring you this exciting news. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Hotpants on this endeavor, and I am confident that the results will be both titillating and enlightening. To celebrate this alliance, I give you my first offering as part of the P&C family: a collection of songs featuring people singing together.

Ms. G. Zee, Esq.

POPCAST #567 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: The great recession, high unemployment, bankruptcy, hostile political parties and a general global disenchantment with our leaders, institutions, economies… (i'll stop there for now).  How will popcast #567 attempt to treat this spiritless state of mind, you ask? Simple; with a beat and a fluffy melody. Sure, things might kinda suck right now but that doesn't mean you can't take 45 minutes to forget any of that stuff exists and bob your head to some sugary dance pop.

POPCAST #566 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: back pain, cowlicks and obsessions with late-night cold-case file news shows.

NOTES ON THE FORMULA OF POPCAST #566: Last Friday a gunman went on a killing spree in Norway. Saturday, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her house. Saturday, my 70+ year old dad got an Ipad and I taught him how to use it. Sunday, I watched a documentary on John Lennon on PBS. Monday, I worked on a watercolor and thought of the past. Tuesday, I worked on my resume and then some more on a watercolor. Wednesday, I made myself a dirty martini and watched a film on a school night. Thursday, I saw a squirrel fall out of an enormous tree and I heard a woman scream when it landed on the picnic table in front of her. Each day, I thought of a particular song. Then I put them all together. This is how Popcast #566 came to be.

1. One More Cup Of Coffee: The White Stripes
2. Going Down On Love: John Lennon
3. Instrumentals" Volume 1: Arthur Russell
4. Brief Candles: The Zombies

POPCAST #563 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Death-colds, failed garage sales, toothaches and that pesky, life-y stuff.

RECOMMENDED USE: Popcast #563 definitely celebrates those uncertain and slightly uncomfortable moments in life that this pop doctor has a particular specialty in. The good news is that this precarious state makes for some fine pop music selections and the realization that hey, good art comes from discomfort so go take that furrowed brow and put it to good use (meaning: you know those popsicle sticks you've been saving for the past few years? yeah. its finally time to make that kick-ass scale model log cabin you've been dreaming about for so long. DO IT.)

SPECIAL NOTE: Don't fight it; Isao Tomita's spaced-out version of Clair de Lune was specially designed to make you close your eyes and imagine yourself floating in pastel-colored sea of possibilities. And yes, your rainbow sparkle space caftan really does look smashing on you.

It's guest popcast time! This week the fantastically fanciful indie-baroque-folk (or as I prefer to call, indie barfolque…) band, Il Gato, stopped by the sprawling Nordic compound known as P&C studios to drop off a guest popcast and a most entertaining story about cats. Quelle merveille! This charming quartet is from San Francisco and they just got back from a grand debut at this year's SXSW showcase. Their current album All these Slippery Things probably needs a home in your record collection (available to stream and purchase here.) Here's a delicious mp3 sample, On Feathers & Arrows (On Burnt Pine)to whet your appetite; super win! This song makes me wanna don a bejeweled jumpsuit and aviator's cap and shoot myself out of a cannon (which is a good thing). So if you like old world strings and trumpets, melancholy waltzes, banjos, accordions, swelling horn sections and Italian cats then  you're probably part gypsy. But more importantly, you're probably going to really dig Il Gato (and you're definitely going to dig this most premium music video of theirs).

Ok, sssh… Now its story time!

(an excerpt from the dusty tour-log of Il Gato bandmember Daimian Holiday Scott.)

After finally making it through all of the mazes and ladders and slides that lead to Pop & Circumstance's secret lair, the first thing we noticed was a funny feeling on our noses. We thought at first it was merely all of the feathers which P&C uses to keep their whole operation afloat, but it was not. It was the cats.

And there was a ridiculous amount of them. There was one driving the steering wheel of our now ascending room. There was one with tiny cat headphones manning the turntable in the corner. There was one in a sexy dress behind the bar whipping up Catmopolitans. There were two we had mistaken for door people who took our coats. In the midst of all of these cats there was us, il gato, and POPCAST #562.

Oh, and let me tell you, POPCAST #562 was far more catty then we can ever pretend to be. There were songs with cat, lion and tiger in them. There were pop songs, blues songs and folk songs. There were songs with cat in the title and there were songs performed by artists with cat in their name. There even was a song by an artist (Juana Molina) who used the cats from around her house in the recordings. It was straight cat crazy! And that is when we knew it was time to take our leave and float back down to the ground: happy to have made it to the secret lair, but oh so grateful to be back home.

1. The Lovecats: The Cure  |  2. Cookin' Catfish: Albert Collins  |  3. Wildcat: Ratatat  |  4. Jimmi Diggin Cats: Digable Planets  |  5. Dread Lion: The Upsetters  |  6. I found this popcast on the floor of a high school gym. There was a dance earlier that night and popcast #560 was surrounded by a pile of soda-soaked crepe streamers. I picked it up and held it to my ear; it sounded like I was feeling at the time, so I put it in my pocket and brought it to the lab. P&C specialists aren't quite sure of the antidotal qualities of this popcast, though I have a feeling it may promote joint health and provide a momentary peak in serotonin levels.

POPCAST #557 TREATS THE FOLLOWING:
Self-doubt, neuroses and mega-headaches.

NOTE: When I first listened to Popcast #557 I suddenly wanted a tattoo, the bouncy defiance of Yeasayer egging me on. Then I wanted to ride a motorcycle really fast to Pounding: "…seize the time, cuz its now or never baby." Suddenly I got to where I was going and needed to dance-express how I really felt to someone and found Cut Copy to do the trick. Star Guitar got me to my next destination and when it started to rain, Gen Orange provided the perfect soggy soundtrack. I furiously giggled when UB40 came on only to get a nostalgic tug on my heartstrings as I hummed along. Not too long after, A.C Newman brought me to my knees by shooting me straight in the heart with his impassioned rendition of Take On Me. As I lay paralyzed in the sand, the hypnotic sounds of a nearby gypsy camp sailed in and out of my conciousness… Thats kinda how it all went down, when I listened to Popcast #557.

POPCAST #555 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Slate-grey, cold winter days and major resume/portfolio procrastination. Also helps treat frizzy fog-hair.

WARNING: Song #1 contains words unsuitable for most children's ears. But then again, any child listening to my popcasts is probably more sophisticated than most adults and is laughing at my warning which means my street cred among hip kids just totally tanked.

POPCAST #554 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Going to stupid work after a fun weekend, frosted car windows in the early morning and whooping cough.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Consider the fact that you can dance to every one of these songs. Even the slower ones (my swedish assistants have run the proper experiments so I could make such declarations). If you don't dance to at least 3 songs in this popcast (bobbing your head at your desk is fully acceptable), then the prescription simply will not work. Take at your own risk.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: For most of us office drones, today is payday. Some of you rad peeps may be self-employed or are freelancers (in which case you prolly never get paid…)or prefer to trade your skills and services for goods such as bars of soap and sacks of wheat. Whatever the case may be, listen to this popcast and then treat yourself to something tasty and unusual for lunch. And by that I mean, get something special. Not like, go out and eat a deer. Unless you have a penchant for wild game in which case I wholeheartedly say, "Bon appetit mon ami!"

Ladies and gentlemen, we here at P&C have a special treat for you today. Miss Gina Z has stopped by with a GUEST POPCAST! And even better, she's created a theme that is sure to get you feelin' all kinds of good. So without further ado, I give you the talented Miss Gina Z! (she made today's P&C righteous tiger header everyone! Tell me you don't want that on a T-shirt… C'MAWN NAW.)

Rrrroawr

Let's quit pussyfootin' around the truth: Life kinda sucks a lot of the time. From minor annoyances like car trouble to bigger issues like getting mauled by your beloved pet white tiger, there really doesn't seem to be much to be happy about some days, and no amount of chocolate, Seinfeld reruns or OxyContin can make the pain go away. But sometimes hearing a catchy tune and another human being tell you that it's alright (or that someone they know is feeling alright, despite not feeling too good herself) is enough to polish that turd you call your life.

POPCAST #548 TREATS THE FOLLOWING:
Tension clouds; a phenomenon both found in the sky before a steady rain and also floating in your head before the coming of imminent change.

RECOMMENDED USE: This week's popcast works really well on a cloudy day, but don't let that stop you if the sun make a surprise appearance (for the record, never let that stop you).

ADDITIONAL NOTES: What you need to know:
Song 1: Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time.
Song 2: At about 08:48 you wanna get on your bike/car/thing-with-wheels and head for an open road. Let the build-up carry you until you've reached the edge of a cliff and fly off, precisely at 13:02 (Head straight for the clouds).
Song 3: Fully take in the tempo shift, preferably by running really fast, anywhere, at 19:50.

POPCAST #547 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: The inability to catch up, to lift your head above water, to break through the cellophane ceiling of administrative mumbo jumbo and get to the stuff that really matters. Also treats hair loss.

RECOMMENDED USE: This week's popcast is a little sinister, a lot cheeky and all perfect for a 45 minute escape into the world of your choosing. I choose the Swiss Alps, a helicopter and a high-speed ski chase down a mountain into a lodge full of happy Scandinavians eating fondue who upon seeing me all yell "HEJ!" and toast many bottles of champagne in my honor.

SPECIAL REPORT: Last weekend I had the distinct pleasure of tagging along with my friend Lisa to a loft concert in San Francisco to see Audiafauna, first group on this week's popcast. They were nothing short of amazing and the energy… simply incredible! These 7 hip kids from Santa Cruz will be very happy to rock your world so go see them live. Though you will find it hard to resist shakin' yo bootay; as beautiful and haunting their songs like Fallen are, I also witnessed them raise the roof like a crazed gospel band out of Macon, Georgia. Holla.

POPCAST #545 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Trouble sleeping. Trouble focusing. Trouble breathing. And measles.

RECOMMENDED USE: Dance free. This week's popcast is best taken however you like it. As Mos Def says in song #1, We in the movies, and you're a staaaaaar. (SHATTAH SHATTAH!)

WARNING: P&C technical support has located a disturbance in the volume field somewhere around tracks 5 onwards. This is most likely due to an overabundance of funk brought on by Arthur Russell & friends a few tracks back. (He's kinda awesome that way.) Don't let it stop you from cranking it up and modern dancing to Ultravox; its very much so recommended.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
 1. Pistola: Mos Def

POPCAST #539 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Bad luck, bad weather, fender-benders, missing paychecks, taxes and sprained ankles.

RECOMMENDED USE: 2010 was supposed to be better than 2009. Sure, in many ways it is. Though every now and then a doozy of a week creeps its way in, disrupting all of our 'fresh new starts'. Maybe its the post-recession, maybe its a bad moon, maybe Scorpio's rising a little too much, maybe the dark cloud just isn't going anywhere for a little bit more. Whatever it is, while our luck is down let's listen to songs that make us feel good about feeling bad. (Note: songs 13 and 14 are specially formulated to get you out of any possible popcast-related funk and back into fighting shape.)

ADDITIONAL NOTES: You're probably thinking: "Whoa, a P&C video! What marvelousness!" Isn't it though? Super thanks to the star of the show, Lil Bruder Alex Z! He helped pick a buncha songs this week too! There's a pretty good chance there'll be more cinema shennanigans to come, so stay tuned P&C Popsters!

Dr. Marnie had the pleasure of reuniting with her fellow musicologist, college roommate and very dear friend Miss Gina Z back in March for a special P&C interview session.

A little about us:
Once upon a time back in '99, I needed a replacement for my vacating roommate and Gina needed a place to live. We didn't know each other; we shared an Art History class and sometimes sat next to each other. One day I asked her for a pen, we struck up a conversation and on the way out of class I mentioned I needed a roommate, she said, "really?" and that's how it all began.

We were a perfect match. It was she who inspired me to put in the hours at KDVS so I could get a 2am show just like her. We never had a fight the entire time we lived together and only once did I drink her fruit punch without her permission. When she moved in, she saw my Farisa organ in the corner and mentioned that she plays the drum. I said, "bring those bitches over and lets jam!" So she asked her parents to bring her drum kit next time they visited her from L.A. and they did. It wasn't long before we developed a setlist and had our first B.P. (band practice). We tested the waters to see how much we could get away with before the manager would chew us but that day wouldn't come for another 2 or so years. From that day on, we'd have B.P. whenever we wanted to, made numerous recordings, experimented with vocals (only after a couple of beers to help hide the shame), wrote our own songs and had a crapload of fun the whole time. Our lineup often changed and sometimes included other friends and family members. The glory ended when Gina decided that she was too good for this town and moved back to L.A. (grumble grumble…)

The amount of fun I had in Apt. 213 should probably be illegal and doing a joint popcast with Gina was a total blast. Lets all tell her that she needs to move back up to Norcal and get the band back together. In the meantime, enjoy this popcast and make sure you stick around to the end for a special little treat (I apologize in advance for all the missed notes…).

POPCAST #533 TREATS THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS: Hypothermia, cavities, depression due to low income earnings, allergies and boring-winter-wardrobe-syndrome.

RECOMMENDED USE: Close your eyes and imagine the first song being sung by a tiny black and white cat sitting on a sandy beach. You will then find yourself transported out of your cubicle and into a world where everything is half its original size and the accepted form of currency is bubble gum. Your journey will end with a flaming hot ball of awesome in the form of So Electric that will give you the power to accomplish any task in front of you; from mailing a letter to building a birdhouse, the power is yours.

WARNINGS: Listening to song #3 while consuming alcohol and wearing clogs may result in a broken ankle and a permanent smile across your face.

RECOMMENDED USE: Use Popcast #532's loosely-based 'electro-robotic-cosmonaut' theme to whisk you away to undiscovered planets where inhabitants wear mod futuristic silver outfits and offer you moon brew and invite you to cosmic dance parties. Decide whether The Carpenters completes this fantasy or totally ruins it.

WARNINGS: Possible volume inconsistencies may inhibit listening pleasure. P&C productions is working to remedy the situation.

After 3.5 hours in a quiet cafe corner, I managed to get my virtual mixtapes back in working order! Sadly, Mixwit, the awesome mixtape maker shut down its site late last year. But the cool thing is that they sent everyone who ever made a mixtape the source files to their mixes so they could host them on their own. New concoctions are definitely on the way but in the meantime you can take a trip down memory lane with these previously posted gems for your listening pleasure. I even surprised myself with how good some of these are. Yeah thats right, I said it.

download popcast #2 here

Hello peeps. This week I bring you the spoken word popcast. Why is it that a spoken track backed by music is suddenly so dramatic and poignant? Why do I find myself dreaming up ultimate screen treatments for each song in this week’s popcast? Yes, even for the last song about Moulty the garage band drummer who had an accident and lost his hand (uhm, hello brilliant). And can I also say that foreign accents and languages = instant spoken word masterpieces. Case in point: pretty much all the songs in this mix, save for Ken Nordine whose voice has been known to melt butter and the punksters singing ‘Moulty’. I hope you enjoy the tunes and have fun thinking up random scenarios for each one. Cheers.
………………………………………………………………………………

1. Dramatic exerpt from the epic Bollywood motion picture classic Disco Dancer 2. The Jam: Pop Art Poem 3. Billy Bragg: Walk Away Renee (version) 4. Stereo Total: Epitath 5. Looper: Dave the Moon Man 6. Ken Nordine: Black 7. Death By Chocolate: A B & C part 2 8. Television Personalities: Diary of a Young Man 9. The Clientele: Losing Haringey 10. The Barbarians: Moulty

Download Popcast 9/23/07

I know its been ages since a fresh photo post but since I’ve changed my life routine about a month ago, I found that the daily photo post just doesn’t work with my crazy art-student schedule. Plus; its a new season and I figured its time for a change. So I’ve decided to revert to the podcast format I actually started the P&C blog off with about a year ago (around this time even, would ya look at that…). My plan is a new podcast a week. UPDATE 10/1/07: I love how every time I say "you know what, I’m done with this and I’m moving on to that" it just never fails to last for only a couple days or so. The truth is that the photo posts aren’t going anywhere. And they work only TOO WELL with my crazy art student schedule. Pssh, whats up with me.. anyways, there’ll just be more popcasts here and there for you to enjoy too. Ok. Thats all I had to say. I hope you kids enjoy my imaginary pods of music; they’re my gift to you. This week’s Popcast is recommended for overcast days and as background music to a lonely evening in your apartment. Its not depressing by any means, at least I don’t think it is. Its how shall we say, retrospective. Yeah, thats good. Without further ado, here’s this week’s half-hour of heaven. Cheers!

………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Beck: Some Things Last a Long Time • Les Lutins: Ella n’a Rien Compris • Land of the Loops: Patience • Au Revoir Simone: Fallen Snow (remix) • Say Hi To Your Mom: These Fangs • Little Dragon: Test  • Kanye West: Heard Em’ Say • Al Green: Back Up Train • Scott Walker: Always Coming Back To You

Its high time for a musical podcast o’ fun for you all. Featured here are some tunes that sound like my summer so far. I haven’t been posting as often as I like these past few days; inspiration is a fickle creature. But I did get a pickle up my butt to put a mix together. This summer’s a busy one so far, finding me either on small excursions or preparing for my next big move come August. So if posts are fewer than usual, its for a good reason. And to my 3 trusty readers out there, don’t give up on me yet; I vow to continue bringing audio/visual goodness for these hot summer days to come. And not unlike George Zimmer of the Men’s Warehouse, I guarantee it. But For now you can all enjoy the June Popcast. (will be deleted after a week, so grab it now!) Sorry peeps; the popcast has vanished.

Behold the ultra-special ‘Best of April POPcast’ which features an assortment of the tunes that made the past month what it was (for me). These are the songs that I hummed in the shower and had momentary mental film credits set to; essentially, my April soundtrack. What did your April sound like? Feel free to share. Whatever it was, we must now wave goodbye to April 2007 cuz its never coming back. In all I’d say April was a bittersweet pill to swallow, but in a good way. Cuz that pill had lots of vitamins in it, which we all know are good for you. Anyways, May is upon us. Hurrah! “Hello May! What magnificent splendors await us?” Click on the funny button below to listen to the Popcast in real time, or click on the link to download.
(Oh, I should mention that I’ll only keep the April popcast up for one week only, as to save space for upcoming music/photo studies for the month of May. Grab it while its hot! Cheers.)
