POPCAST #539 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Bad luck, bad weather, fender-benders, missing paychecks, taxes and sprained ankles.

RECOMMENDED USE: 2010 was supposed to be better than 2009. Sure, in many ways it is. Though every now and then a doozy of a week creeps its way in, disrupting all of our 'fresh new starts'. Maybe its the post-recession, maybe its a bad moon, maybe Scorpio's rising a little too much, maybe the dark cloud just isn't going anywhere for a little bit more. Whatever it is, while our luck is down let's listen to songs that make us feel good about feeling bad. (Note: songs 13 and 14 are specially formulated to get you out of any possible popcast-related funk and back into fighting shape.)

ADDITIONAL NOTES: You're probably thinking: "Whoa, a P&C video! What marvelousness!" Isn't it though? Super thanks to the star of the show, Lil Bruder Alex Z! He helped pick a buncha songs this week too! There's a pretty good chance there'll be more cinema shennanigans to come, so stay tuned P&C Popsters!

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
1. Hard Times: Run DMC
2. The Message: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5
3. Life is Shit: The Dead Milkmen
4. Novocaine for the Soul: Eels
5. It Ain't Easy: David Bowie
6. My Neighbor the Firefighter: uh..(?)
7. Why Took Your Advice: Grandaddy
8. All You Need Is Hate: The Delgados

11. What's Happening Brother: Marvin Gaye

New Popcast coming Monday! It'll blow yer socks off. But in the meantime, try to keep your socks on while you watch my new favorite thing this week: The Clientele covering M.I.A.'s Paper Planes. Makes me wanna stick it to the man… while sipping on Pimm's Cup, wearing a ruffled shirt and velvet pants, of course. Pip pip, ol' bean.

Check out the Onion's AV Club for more fun covers in their Undercover project.

POPCAST #538 TREATS THE FOLLOWING: Memory loss, itchy/watery eyes, olfactory hallucinations and hangnails.

RECOMMENDED USE: Listen while a steady Spring rain falls outside your window. Close your eyes and ignore the chaos around you.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: You will feel a tug at your heart and a tinge of nostalgia. Right before you get too big a lump in your throat, song #10 kicks in, handing you a pair of assless chaps and a hoeroic emotional rescue that only an 80s Cher ballad can. Good luck.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
 1. Excuses: The Morning Benders
2. You: Gold Panda
3. Sweet Disposition: Temper Trap (RAC Mix)
4. The Blues: Primary 1 (feat. Nina Persson)

Dr. Marnie had the pleasure of reuniting with her fellow musicologist, college roommate and very dear friend Miss Gina Z back in March for a special P&C interview session.

A little about us:
Once upon a time back in '99, I needed a replacement for my vacating roommate and Gina needed a place to live. We didn't know each other; we shared an Art History class and sometimes sat next to each other. One day I asked her for a pen, we struck up a conversation and on the way out of class I mentioned I needed a roommate, she said, "really?" and that's how it all began.

We were a perfect match. It was she who inspired me to put in the hours at KDVS so I could get a 2am show just like her. We never had a fight the entire time we lived together and only once did I drink her fruit punch without her permission. When she moved in, she saw my Farisa organ in the corner and mentioned that she plays the drum. I said, "bring those bitches over and lets jam!" So she asked her parents to bring her drum kit next time they visited her from L.A. and they did. It wasn't long before we developed a setlist and had our first B.P. (band practice). We tested the waters to see how much we could get away with before the manager would chew us but that day wouldn't come for another 2 or so years. From that day on, we'd have B.P. whenever we wanted to, made numerous recordings, experimented with vocals (only after a couple of beers to help hide the shame), wrote our own songs and had a crapload of fun the whole time. Our lineup often changed and sometimes included other friends and family members. The glory ended when Gina decided that she was too good for this town and moved back to L.A. (grumble grumble…)

The amount of fun I had in Apt. 213 should probably be illegal and doing a joint popcast with Gina was a total blast. Lets all tell her that she needs to move back up to Norcal and get the band back together. In the meantime, enjoy this popcast and make sure you stick around to the end for a special little treat (I apologize in advance for all the missed notes…).

RECOMMENDED USE: If you find yourself with your hands tied behind your back, wanting to fix something you know you can't, sometimes its better to walk away with a sweet song in your pocket and hope for a better day. Also, warm brownies with vanilla ice cream on top don't hurt either.
